PEGASUS IN THE GREEK MYTHOLOGY

     Pegasus is the famous winged horse in the Greek Mythology. Shortly after its birth, the magic steed struck the ground on mount Helicon and on the spot a spring began to flow. The magic spring was believed to be a sacred place and a source for a poetic inspiration.

     All longed in vain to catch and tame the creature. This became an obsession of Bellerophon, prince of Corinth, who on the advice of a seer, spent a night in the temple of Goddess Athena. As he slept, she appeared to him with a golden bridle and told him that it would enable him to capture Pegasus. When Bellerophon awoke, he found the golden bridle beside him and easily captured the winged horse. Mounted on Pegasus, prince Bellerophon was invincible.

     Pegasus carried the hero in many victorious adventures against the Amazons and the Chimaera, a fire-breathing monster. But the young man angered God Zeus when he attempted immortality and wanted to place himself among the Gods. As Bellerophon rode Pegasus up to mount Olympus, home of the Gods, God Zeus sent down a gadfly to annoy the flying horse who threw off his master. The Corinthian hero fell into earth, lame and blind.

     Pegasus however became the honored bearer of Zeus's thunderbolts and was placed among the stars. A constellation was named after him.
